Reading Clinic
We will begin accepting applications for the 2014 Summer Reading Clinic on March 1, 2014. If you would like to receive a reminder to apply for the 2014 Reading Clinic, please contact Deanna Stoube.
Parent Form, Parent Interview, and $25 deposit require for your child to be considered. Teacher form can come later but needs to be received as soon as possible.
2014 Summer Reading Clinic will be June 23, 2014-July 18, 2014
The Clinic is intended for children between first and eighth grades who are experiencing issues with their reading/writing development. Students who attend the month-long Clinic are paired with a St. Ambrose student in the Teacher Education Program. The SAU student tutors receive credit for their participation in the Clinic and are supervised and advised by the Reading Clinic director and/or trained clinical supervisor.
Children are assessed at the outset of the Clinic to determine their appropriate reading level, as well as strengths and needs in the areas of comprehension, phonics, sight words, fluency, spelling and writing. The outcomes of these assessments will determine how each student and tutor will proceed throughout the Clinic.
Assessments are also conducted at the end of the Clinic to verify each student's progress and development. Tutors meet with parents/guardians on the last day of Clinic and review their diagnostic results, methods of instruction, and recommendations for continued support.

1. What are the dates and times of the clinic?
Monday, June 24 - Friday, July 19, 2013. Tutoring occurs daily Monday - Friday from 9:45 - 11:00 a.m. on the St. Ambrose Campus.
2. What is the cost of the clinic?
$250. A $25 non-refundable application fee is due before a child is considered (Make checks payable to St. Ambrose University). The remaining $225 is due on or before July 19, 2013. However, monthly payments can be arranged past this date.
3. How do I apply to the Clinic?
1) The parent must send a $25 non-refundable application fee, and complete the following forms:
a. Parent application
b. Parent interview
2) The teacher must complete the teacher form.
Parents will be notified on or before May 20, 2013 of the status of the application.
4. How are children chosen for the clinic?
A child must:
· Have completed at least Kindergarten. Children entering ninth grade and higher are not eligible.
· Have parents that are committed to the child being present at every tutoring session.
We do not accept children who have behavioral or mental disabilities since the program is not intended to meet the needs of these children.
Provided the above requirements have been fulfilled and all paperwork received by St. Ambrose, children are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. However, minimum numbers of children are needed for each grade level and thus a child may be denied because the quota for a particular grade level has not been met.
5. Is this individual tutoring or group tutoring?
Each child is tutored daily, one-on-one for at least an hour.
6. What activities occur during tutoring?
Assessments will occur during the first 2-4 days of clinic. The number of days depends on the grade level and ability of the child.
Assessments are given to determine each child's appropriate reading level, plus strengths and needs in the areas of comprehension, phonics, sight words, fluency, spelling, and writing.
Therefore, each child has the same components in each tutoring session although different skills will be the focus for each child depending on the results of the assessments.
7. Can my child be absent for any of the sessions for such things as a family vacation, dental appointments, swimming lessons, summer camps, etc.?
NO.
The college students who do the tutoring are elementary pre-service teachers. The tutoring is part of a required course that must be fulfilled before graduation. Therefore, the college student must meet the expectations of the professor by fulfilling a minimum number of hours of tutoring plus complete diagnostics, write daily lesson plans AND complete the requirements for the five hours a week of lecture that is in addition to the five hours of tutoring. In other words, if your child is absent, the college student cannot fulfill his/her obligations and responsibilities.
8. Is it OK that my child is absent if I'm willing to bring my child to St. Ambrose at a different time, such as very early morning or afternoon?
NO.
1) Many of the college students have other responsibilities such as work, families, or additional classes.
2) Due to legal issues, all tutoring sessions are supervised by St. Ambrose Reading Clinic staff.
9. Will the Reading Clinic meet on the 4th of July?
NO. The 4th of July is the only day off during Reading Clinic if it falls on a weekday.
