Degree Requirements

Requirements for a Major in Philosophy:
33 semester credits including PHIL 101, Introduction to Philosophy; PHIL 201, Logic; PHIL 207, Ethics; PHIL 217, History of Ancient Philosophy; PHIL 360, History of Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy; PHIL 365, History of 16th to 18th Century Philosophy; PHIL 367, History of 19th and 20th Century Philosophy; PHIL 405, Philosophy of Knowledge, or PHIL 420, Metaphysics; WI-PHIL 495, Senior Seminar; and two courses from 300- or 400-level philosophy.

Requirements for Philosophy as a Second Major:
27 semester credits including PHIL 101, Introduction to Philosophy; PHIL 201, Logic; two courses from PHIL 217, History of Ancient Philosophy,  PHIL 360, History of Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy, PHIL 365, History of 16th to 18th Century Philosophy, PHIL 367, History of 19th and 20th Century Philosophy, PHIL 370, History of American Philosophy, WI-PHIL 375, Existentialism; two courses from    PHIL 207, Ethics, PHIL 208 Philosophies of Life, PHIL 210, Social/Political Philosophy,  PHIL 305, Business Ethics, PHIL 310, Bio-Medical Ethics, PHIL 311, Environmental Ethics,  PHIL 343, Ethics of Peace and Non-violence, PHIL 415, Issues in Ethics Theory; one course from PHIL 405 Philosophy of Knowledge, or PHIL 420, Metaphysics one other philosophy course, and WI-PHIL 495, Senior Seminar.

Requirements for a Minor in Philosophy:
PHIL 201, Logic; PHIL 207, Ethics; PHIL 217, History of Ancient Philosophy, (or PHIL 360, History of Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy; PHIL 365, History of 16th to 18th Century Philosophy; or PHIL 367, History of 19th and 20th Century Philosophy, with instructor permission); and two courses from 300- or 400-level philosophy.

Requirements for a Minor in Applied Ethics: PHIL 207, Ethics; and four of PHIL 208, Philosophies of Life, PHIL 210, Social/Political Philosophy,  PHIL 302, Peace and Justice Seminar, PHIL 305, Business Ethics, PHIL 310, Bio-Medical Ethics, PHIL 311, Environmental Ethics, PHIL 343, Ethics of Peace and Non-violence; PHIL 415, Issues in Ethics Theory.

Requirements for Minor in History of Philosophy: PHIL 217, History of Ancient Philosophy; PHIL 360, History of Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy; PHIL 365, History of 16th to 18th Century Philosophy; PHIL 367, History of 19th and 20th Century Philosophy;  and one of PHIL 208, Philosophies of Life; PHIL 210, Social/Political Philosophy;  PHIL 370, History of American Philosophy;  WI-PHIL 375, Existentialism; PHIL 380, Introduction to Asian Philosophy; PHIL 451, Directed Readings in Philosophy;  or PHIL 490, Special Seminar in Philosophy.

Courses at the 300- and 400-level require completion of at least one course at the 100- or 200-level.
