CIMA

The Catholic Identity Mission Assessment (CIMA) project offers Catholic higher education institutions tools to assist in the multifaceted process of discerning how and to what extent they are fulfilling their missions. St. Ambrose University uses the CIMA instruments to provide an understanding of the unique articulation of its Catholic identity, mission, and charism. The student surveys gauge levels of student engagement in and understanding of common themes in Catholic higher education. Although it will provide comparative data, it is not designed to measure conformity to any single definition of Catholic higher education. Next Administration: TBA as results from the 20-21 administration are still being analyzed for dissemination.

  • New Students. This survey helps establish a baseline from those at the beginning of their college career and addresses both traditional age undergraduates and adult learners.
  • Graduating Students. This survey measures changes since the beginning of the students' college experience, relevant for both traditional age students and adult learners.

Campus Climate Survey

Aligned with the Core Value of Diversity and Integrity, SAU uses the EAB Campus Climate Survey to understand students' perceptions and experiences, identify strengths and areas for improvement, and measure year-over-year progress. Results are benchmarked to understand how campus climate is experienced compared to peers. Next Administration: Spring 2023

ETS HEIghten Outcomes Assessment

To benchmark St. Ambrose student achievement with relation to the fundamental skills and knowledge claimed by the General Education program outcomes, the HEIghten Outcomes Assessment suite is used to sample student performance. To date, the Written Communication, Critical Thinking, and Intercultural Competency and Diversity assessments have been administered. Next Administration: Spring 2023.

General Education Outcomes

Prior to graduation, traditional students are surveyed regarding their abilities and competencies aligned with the general education program and its outcomes. Students are asked to reflect upon the extent to which experiences within the general education curriculum contributed toward their overall growth. Administered every semester.

National Survey of Student Engagement

The NSSE annually collects information at hundreds of four-year colleges and universities about student participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development through The College Student Report.

The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. St. Ambrose University uses its data to identify aspects of the undergraduate experience inside and outside the classroom that can be improved through changes in policies and practices more consistent with good practices in undergraduate education. This information is also used by prospective college students, their parents, college counselors, academic advisers, institutional research officers, and researchers to learn more about how students spend their time and what they gain from their experiences. Next Administration: Spring 2024

The Outcomes Survey® (TOS)

The Outcomes Survey is an online tool for gathering employment and graduate school admissions data from new college graduates based upon prevailing national demands and standards. The graduates of St. Ambrose University are surveyed at near graduation, as well as three and six months after. In addition to obtaining employment or admission to graduate school, students provide critical insight into their engagement in career exploration and job search activities, the role of experiential education in securing their first destination occupation, satisfaction with their first destination occupation, and motivation for pursuing a college degree and occupation. In 2021, TOS navigated to a new platform, and as such some summary reporting measures changed or are still being developed. As such reports below from 2015-2020 are broken down by majors. As of 2021 this report is broken down by degree earned. Administered every semester.

Student Satisfaction Inventory and Adult Student Satisfaction – Priorities Survey (ASPS)

St. Ambrose University partners with Noel Levitz to administer both the Student Satisfaction Inventory™ for traditional undergraduate students and the Adult Student Satisfaction-Priorities Survey™ to assess adult students in both adult and graduate education programs. SAU uses this information to determine what is important to students, as well as their satisfaction with programs. The survey encompasses the full range of student experiences. Next Administration: Spring 2025.

End of Course Survey – Student Instructional Report (SIR II)

St. Ambrose students are asked to complete an online, end-of-course survey for each course they are enrolled in each semester. Results are provided to instructors to enhance the educational experience for students. In addition, department-level results are formally reviewed through the program review process. College and Institutional-level results are used to support strategic initiatives on a variety of levels. Administered every semester.

National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement (NSLVE)

Central to SAU's core value of Catholicity is the Catholic Intellectual Tradition whereby Ambrosians critically engage with ideas, practices, and ways of thinking informed by the dialogue of faith and reason. Acts of justice and service align with this tradition, especially as it relates to democracy in the Unites States and the world. Ambrosians are guided by the US Catholic Bishops that responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation. Bishops carefully note in Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call to Political Responsibility, that they "... do not intend to tell Catholics for whom to vote or against whom to vote. Our purpose is to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with God's truth. We recognize that the responsibility to make choices in political life rests with each individual in the light of a properly formed conscience, and that participation goes well beyond casting a vote in a particular election" (2019, p. 13). As such, student engagement in elections is valued. Participation in the NSLVE allows SAU to assess student engagement in the democratic process though knowledge of students' aggregate voter registration and turnout rates in national elections.
