Frequently asked questions

Who is required to live on campus?
SAU requires all full-time first- and second-year students (defined as those with less than 60 credits) to live in a university residence hall unless the student lives within 30 miles of campus with their parent or legal guardian.

When are contracts due?

• Preferred Residents: March 19, 2013 at 4 p.m. - Gottlieb Lounge

• Traditional Residents: March 21, 2013 at 4 p.m. - Gottlieb Lounge

All contracts must be turned into the Residence Life Office in the Rogalski Center. PLEASE NOTE: Students who do not meet this deadline will lose priority and will not be guaranteed housing.  

Do I have to clear my restrictions?
Students must clear all Student Services restrictions from their record before turning in their housing contract. Failure to clear a restriction may affect individual and/or group placement. To check on any restrictions, please contact the Residence Life office, or go to Beeline under "Registration Readiness Info". 

Priority points/credit hours
The total priority points earned by an individual or group determines the order in which housing is selected.

• All students receive 1 priority point per semester of full time enrollment no matter what college/university was attended
• There is a 6 priority point cap per student (6 semesters = 6 priority points)
• There is a 120 credit hour cap per student. Students wanting to live on campus who have over 100 hours need to submit a sheet explaining why they still desire on-campus housing (In the OT or PT program, changed majors, etc.)
• It is the responsibility of each individual student who has lost priority points to share this information with her/his group members. If you want to dispute your assigned priority points please go to this link to start the appeal process. Remember - Appeals cannot be done for priority points taken away because of discipline.

Housing selection is based on the following ranking/order:

1. Total group priority points (in case of tie between groups, go to #2)
2. Total group completed credit hours (in case of tie between groups, go to #3)
3. Average of all group member's GPAs (in case of tie between groups, go to #4)
4. Flip a coin

Steps to Prepare for the Selection Process

• Form a group or groups to select housing. Remember that priority points favor larger groups. This means that a group of four has a greater chance of selecting a suite in Rohlman than a group of two has at a double (half of a suite).
• Please note that in the preferred setting the largest housing group is 8 residents in the townhouses and 6 in other locations.
• Have more than one option. If you have more than four people in a group, you must split into smaller groups. It will be beneficial to all groups to have options for multiple-sized groups (e.g., only the highest-ranking six-person groups will be able to select the six-person apartments-if your group doesn't make it, you need back-up options).
• Select a designated spokesperson.
• Turn in all paperwork including: housing contracts and designated spokesperson form to the Residence Life office by 4 p.m. on March 19 for Preferred residents and by 4 p.m. on March 21 for Traditional residents.
• Wait for group listing to be posted, and review your options.
• Group spokesperson attends the either the Preferred Housing Forum on April 10th or Traditional Housing Forum on April 16th and to select housing.
• Other group members may attend as well; however, it is not mandatory. Only designated spokesperson must attend.

• January 31, 2013: Housing Open Forum (Mandatory for Freshman and Transfer Students), 9:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Rogalski Center Ballroom
• Feburary 8, 2013: Themed Housing Applications Due by 4:00pm, Residence Life Office
• February 27, 2013: Roommate Social, 8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., Rogalski Center Ballroom
• March 19, 2013: Preferred Housing contracts due by 4 p.m. (collection in Gottlieb Lounge)
• March 21, 2013:  Traditional Housing contracts due by 4 p.m. (collection in Gottlieb Lounge)
• April 8, 2013: Preferred group rankings posted in the Residence Life Office by noon
• April 10, 2013: Preferred Housing Forum, 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Rogalski Center Ballroom
• April 15, 2013: Traditional group rankings posted, Residence Life Office by noon
• April 16, 2013: Traditional Housing Forum, 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Rogalski Center Ballroom
• May 15, 2013 : Housing deposit refund deadline, Residence Life office

Designated spokesperson

Each group requesting traditional or preferred housing assignments must choose a spokesperson for the group by filling out a designated spokesperson form available online. Download Spokesperson Form

Spokesperson responsibilities include:

• Liaison between group and Residence Life from now through the 2013-14 year.
• Attend all appropriate open forums.
• Choose a substitute if spokesperson cannot attend the open forum.
• Select group housing assignment from available choices when it is the group's turn at the forum and, if necessary, request group to be put on wait list.
• During the summer, contact Residence Life to check if there have been changes/cancellations from other group members. Residence Life reserves the right to assign other students to any open rooms as necessary, without notification.

Note: If a designated spokesperson or substitute does not attend the open forum, Residence Life staff will make a housing assignment based upon information received.

 

Preferred Housing

Preferred housing is for juniors and seniors (with 60 credit hours or more), and graduate students. Given different preferred housing options, all groups must turn in a completed designated spokesperson form for every preferred housing assignment for which their group wants consideration (i.e., you may be in a 6-person and a 4-person group). Groups may list as many choices as they wish for preferred housing on the designated spokesperson form.

Please note: being of Junior or Senior status does not guarantee preferred housing selection. Some housing groups will need to select traditional housing.

To select a unit, 3/4 of occupancy must be filled. For example, to get an 4 person assignment, 3 people need to be in the group.

Preferred housing options include McCarthy (West) Hall, North Hall, Hagen Hall, Tiedemann Hall, the townhouses and houses as follows:

• Groups of four: Hagen, Tiedemann, McCarthy Hall, and North Hall Academic apartments
• Groups up to five: Houses
• Groups of six: Hagen apartments
• Groups of six: Houses if two members are related (must be verified by Residence Life)
• Groups of eight: Townhouses

Undergraduate Houses

View the houses that will be available for sign-up at the preferred housing forum.

Houses may have to be designated as either women's or men's houses. If so, this information will be posted along with the group rankings. Residence Life reserves the right to offer more houses at or after the housing forum, based on the housing needs of the campus. Any additional houses will be offered to groups in the order in which they are on the wait list. Groups who have already selected a house or apartment will not be reassigned.

Traditional Housing

Traditional housing is typically reserved for first-year and sophomore students (fewer than 60 credits). Assignments are made by groups of four first, then three, then by two if space allows. Traditional housing options include Davis Hall, Franklin Hall, North Hall, Hayes Hall, and Rohlman Hall as follows:

• Groups of four: Rohlman suites, Franklin suites or North Hall Academic suites.
• Groups of three: Davis suites (double room and single room per suite) or remaining suites in Rohlman, Franklin, or North Hall.
• Groups of two: Davis or Hayes double rooms, Rohlman, Franklin, or North Hall double rooms (if left after suites sign-up).
• For one: Davis single rooms (women only) and Hayes single rooms (men only).

Waitlists

A wait list will be developed after the preferred housing forum for groups who did not receive an assignment. List order will be based on group priority points. These groups may, based on availability, be placed in traditional halls. After the traditional housing forum a wait list, based on group priority points, will be developed for traditional groups who did not receive their first choice of assignment.

Other important notes

• In Davis and Hayes Halls, single rooms are billed at the traditional double rate.
• There are no "squatter's rights."
• All resident students must participate in one of the following meal plans: 19 meals weekly, 14 meals weekly, 10 meals weekly, 7 meals weekly (available only to students in preferred housing), or the Flex 160. Meal plans may be changed in writing only during the first two weeks of the fall and spring semesters.
• Graduating seniors and students not returning to campus must submit a request for damage deposit refund form to Residence Life by April 15, or risk forfeiting their damage deposit. Download Housing deposit refund request here.
