SAU Learning Communities

The first year of college can be daunting (Independence! Time management! Laundry!) and SAU has some great academic and social opportunities to make the transition easier. Participating in common learning experiences can help new students make friends and form relationships with faculty who are interested in helping first-year students make the transition to college. Students who participate in Learning Communities at SAU are more likely to stay in college, participate in service activities in the first semester, and connect to important campus resources.

Some learning communities provide an introduction to a major while others are built around an area of interest or current issue. All communities include Information Literacy (a graduation requirement), and New Student Seminar, an extended orientation including First Book, focused degree-planning, and an introduction to the liberal arts. Your academic advisor will help you choose the best fit during your orientation appointment. For now, check out the options below and see where your first-year interests take you!

Introduction to the Majors

The Art of Science (Science/pre-professional health career)
You're going to be in the thick of it for this community. By conducting research at Nahant Marsh in Davenport - one of the few remaining large wetlands along the upper Mississippi River - you will learn how to ask interesting questions, formulate hypotheses, design experiments, analyze your data, and talk about what you learn with your peers. Business Thinking and Speaking (Business)
Whether it's the board room or the water cooler, this community offers students a unique opportunity to learn to think like a business-minded person and speak effectively in both informal and formal (business) settings. Also satisfies: ACCT 201; COMM 129

Creating Success in Business (Business)
Prepare for success in the business world by understanding how businesses execute marketing and apply those concepts to themselves. Principles of Marketing presents the key elements of a marketing program while Survey of Human Communication teaches students to organize and verbalize ideas, as well as effectively communicate in group settings. Fulfilling the Dream: The Promise of American Higher Education (Education)
Are you the same person as your great-grandfather or great-grandmother? Were you raised any differently? From generation to generation, there are slight and sometimes huge changes in psychological development of children and adolescents. Explore these in a historical context from 1877 to the present. Also satisfies: EDUC 284; HIST 202

How May We (Engineers) Help You? (Engineering)
The stereotypical view of engineers is usually one of these: 1) Engineers build things, 2) Engineers drive trains, 3) Engineers solve math problems (while sitting in a cubicle). That's far from the truth! Engineers invent, design, and create. They impact our everyday lives in some big ways - did you drive over a bridge lately? - and small ways - that cell phone you're holding is the work of hundreds of engineers. Explore the very human side of engineering and make a difference in your world. Also satisfies: ENGR 105; ENGR 112

In Sickness and in Health (Pre-Occupational Therapy)
Intended for students interested in health and disease (especially those considering occupational therapy), this learning community will explore the personal impact and biology of disease through writing and experimentation. By investigating human body systems and conducting ethnographic fieldwork, students will learn about historical and contemporary diseases and reveal the "secret lives" and travails of those impacted. Open Interest

Be the Change: Learning and Serving in the Community and the World
Explore human rights issues that impact people around the world and learn about the people who inspire us to act. Students will also partner with service agencies in the community. Also satisfies: SOC 101; WMST 201

Global Issues: A Cross Cultural Perspective
In the 21st century, the roles of world religions take different forms through international violence and conflicts. Investigating and delving into these problems will give you a well-rounded understanding of the many topics you see headlining the news these days - and some that never get a footnote. Also satisfies: PSCI 130; IS 210; PSCI 130

The Hero and Heroine's Path
Storytellers, artists, and filmmakers have repeatedly revisited certain themes, depicting and recreating symbols based on myths, legends, folklore, and fairy tales. In this LC, students will discuss and reflect on tales and archetypes representing a broad range of Western and non-Western civilizations, from the Classical world to contemporary pop culture. Introduction to Creative Arts: Text as Image, Image as Text
Print isn't dead! In fact, you'll be creating your own book in this Learning Community. You'll focus on the interrelationships between narrative text and visual image and explore how they work together. Also satisfies: ENG 101, ART 100

Speaking Truth to Power
Use your words! They're mightier than the sword, after all. They can persuade or threaten; illuminate or deceive; inform or obscure. Do you want to use them to promote justice, inspire the betterment of lives, or condone oppression? The words we choose can be the key to success or get us into trouble with the powers that be. Speaking Up and Acting Out: Dramatic Roles in American History
What is it about those dramatic moments in American history that make us want to develop our own sense of self? In this community, you'll learn about public speaking -what made the Gettysburg Address so powerful and Steve Jobs so captivating - and then you'll take the stage in debate and persuasion. Wonders of the Universe; Wonders of the Mind
Logic and astronomy go together like Mr. Spock and Star Trek. Astronomy studies the order of the universe; logic creates order in the mind. In this Learning Community, you will study both of these and see the interesting and important connection between clear perceptions of space and clear perceptions of our world.
