Edward Sturr graduated from St. Ambrose College in 1959 with a fine arts degree. Shortly after, he moved to Chicago, where he taught photography at a local high school and continued to take evening classes at the legendary Institute of Design—learning from renowned photographers like Aaron Siskind and Harry Callahan. The elegant and concise photographs in this show are from this period—the 1960s—and reveal the influence of these mentors. According to Sturr, "Shadows can read as architectural structures, flagpoles and curbs can frame a space, and candid shots of human activity in an urban environment can be poignant."
