In July, Monsignor Robert Gruss ’90 was ordained Bishop of the Diocese of Rapid City, S.D. Having entered the priesthood in his late 30s, the 55-year-old Gruss asked, “Who could have written this script except the Lord?”
Rolled out this fall, the Mechanical Engineering program is the only program in the Quad Cities and one of only three in Iowa. With this new offering from the Engineering and Physics Department, St. Ambrose is preparing to become a direct competitor in that field with other public, Midwestern universities.
It isn’t everyday you see a university president don a flight suit—let alone one with a “Blue Angels” emblem on it. Even so, this fall President Joan Lescinski, CSJ, did just that and “flew with the Angels.”
Two new members were added to the President’s Cabinet this fall. John Cooper began as the new Vice President for Enrollment Management, and Jeanne Kobuszewski is serving as Vice President for Advancement.
Over the summer, however, the lot shed its moniker for good. SAU’s physical plant executed a massive, $1.85 million improvement project, funded by the university, the City of Davenport, and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.

This is the second issue of Scene in which we continue to "unpack" our university's vision statement to explore the meaning and significance of each of its elements, so that we may understand this vision more wholly, and thus use it more purposefully to guide us in planning for the future.
As students in one class are learning, forgiveness must become a habit, a way of life, if we are to find lasting peace as individuals, as a society and as a world.
A gift by the late Rev. Joseph Kokjohn leaves a legacy entirely in keeping both with his lifelong dedication to St. Ambrose and the university’s core mission of working for social justice in the Catholic tradition.
