A group of 17 licensed teachers received their master of education in teaching degree at St. Ambrose University's winter commencement ceremony Dec. 15. They were the first graduates of the SAU program based on the National Board for Professional Teaching standards.
"The past two years have been the most difficult and, at the same time, the most exhilarating of my life," says Michelle Schneden, Geneseo High School English teacher and one of 17 graduates of St. Ambrose's first MEdT cohort. "I have grown exponentially both professionally and personally. The MEdT program exceeded my expectations in every way, and I recommend it to teachers as a way of invigorating and advancing their teaching careers."
The MEdT program, which now offers a reading endorsement, provides licensed teachers the skills and resources to create a portfolio to apply for National Board Certification while also earning a master's degree. It is delivered in an accelerated format of eight-week courses that meet once a week and is designed to be completed within two years. The program offers a reduced tuition rate.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed watching this first class of teachers grow professionally, analyze their classroom practice, and improve their instruction with best practices," says Maggie Woods, program director. "The program's value of providing a way to earn your master's degree and develop your National Board portfolio creates a win-win situation for these amazing teachers and the students they teach."
