Budding nurses, doctors and physical therapists will have the opportunity to try out these and other health care careers during the new Health Sciences Adventure Camp June 23-27, as St. Ambrose debuts its third summer science program for kids. Joining the popular Kids & Chemistry and Race into Engineering programs, Health Science Adventures will introduce 30 seventh- and eighth-grade students to the health sciences professions. All three science camps are largely funded by a gift from Dr. Thomas and Mary Ann Stoffel.
"I had read about a similar camp and was intrigued, so I went online to see what other schools were doing," says Professor of Occupational Therapy Christine Urish, who is coordinating the program. "Madison Elementary in Davenport invited me to participate in a wonderful program teaching about occupational therapy. The program worked really well, and the campers were great kids. I brought the idea back to St. Ambrose, and we're finally ready to roll it out."
The Health Sciences Adventure Camp will feature daily hands-on activities in nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech pathology, social work, exercise science, pharmacy, and medicine. With St. Ambrose health sciences students serving as camp counselors, campers will learn how to check vital signs, perform CPR, take health assessments, and choose healthy behaviors for themselves. They will travel to clinics throughout the area and have the opportunity to job-shadow professionals in two different areas of healthcare.
"We want to provide the kids with a fun, information-filled experience to help them understand how to stay healthy, how to assist others with health issues, and to learn about the different health sciences careers available to them," Urish says.
