Year of the Piano

August 2010

Through thoughtful gifts from generous donors, the university has received a 9-foot, Yamaha concert grand piano with a Disklavier system. A Disklavier is a digital play/record system developed exclusively by Yamaha and coveted among composers, performers and students alike.

"It's an exciting day for St. Ambrose," said Music Department chair, Bill Campbell, when the piano was being delivered in July to Madsen Hall. "This is an investment for a long, long period, and we've made a good one with this particular piano."

A custom-built instrument, the piano uses fiber optic technology that allows the pianist to record what they play and then listen.

To celebrate this unique piano, the St. Ambrose Music Department is hosting Year of the Piano. Throughout the 2010-11 academic year, several pianists will be invited to play the concert grand piano, and the performances will be free and open to the public.
