KALA Expands Programming

12/10/2010

St. Ambrose University KALA-FM (88.5 FM) has initiated programming aimed primarily at the Spanish-speaking listener on 106.1 FM in the Quad Cities area. The programming on 106.1 FM is a combination of student-produced (non-Spanish), and network programming from Radio Bilingue (Spanish).

KALA has offered Spanish programming for 30 years, but will now offer it on a near-full-time basis.

This programming is the analog version of the material KALA has broadcast on its HD-2 digital channel since October 2009. The analog channel, identified as K291BP, operates with a power of 250 Watts from atop the Galvin Fine Arts building, reaching into a radius of about 10 miles from campus. KALA HD-2 operates at 88.5 FM with a power of 10,000 Watts and reaches into a 30 mile radius.

The student-produced programming currently runs for 12 hours on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (when the main KALA channel is running Spanish programming), but will be expanded as needed. SAU students programming the Saturday shifts offer a variety of music.

This expansion of operations was made possible by a grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) as part of their Public Telecommunications Facilities Program (PTFP).

KALA will no longer operate on 105.5 FM. Listeners who used to listen at 105.5 will now have to listen at 88.5 FM on either an analog or HD-R (digital) radio.
