Recruiting at the IL HS Theatre Festival

(L-R) Williams '14, Jett '13, Wilke '13, and Andrew Lyons, admissions counselor

February 2011

The weekend of January 6, three Ambrose theatre students took a trip to the Illinois High School Theatre Festival to recruit future Ambrose theatre students. Hannah Wilke ‘12, Kirsten Jett '13, and Emma Williams '14 were escorted by Andrew Lyons, SAU Admissions counselor, to this 3-day festival. They set up a table with piles of information about Ambrose in general and, more specifically, the theatre department. Many high school students stopped by the table to chat with the representatives and get some more information about the university.

One of the days, the SAU representatives had the opportunity to sit through theatre auditions. From 8 am-6 pm the high school students performed monologues and songs for all the college representatives present. The girls selected individuals to whom they would give "a call-back." After all the auditions were over, the high school students received callbacks. This attracted many talented high school seniors to the Ambrose table who would be a good fit with the department. The auditions were strictly based on performance, but students with intriguing resumes were also considered. A student with technical experience on their resume could receive a call back, as they would be put to great use in our theatre's technical team. The more diversely-experienced a student was, the better their chances of getting a call back.

By the end of the festival Wilke, Jett and Williams had a book full of contact information from the potential recruits and have been keeping in close contact with a handful of students to assist in their process of applying, visiting, and auditioning for scholarships. Lyons says, "the SAU girls did an excellent job talking to students and presenting the school in a positive manner. Their energy really drew students to our table."
