The admissions cycle for the Class of 2013 recently came to an end. Over 350 qualified individuals from all over the country applied. Dr. Barb Ehrmann, chair of the admissions and retention committee, highlighted the qualities of this year's applicants.
"We are seeing an increased number of applicants from states other than Iowa and Illinois, but continue to maintain the high quality of our applicants," Dr. Ehrmann said. "The students interviewed during the spring decision period had an average college GPA of 3.6 and an average total GRE score of 1100."
In addition, nearly 60 applicants applied during the Early Honors decision period, which requires a minimum college GPA of 3.7. Barb noted that due to the growing reputation of the SAU program, increased recruitment efforts, and the added exposure through Physical Therapist Central Application Service, applications were up nearly 20 percent from last year.
This year, 38 high school students interviewed for Track I. Track I gives qualified high school students a conditional acceptance into the graduate program and allows them to receive a Bachelor's degree and Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 5 ½ years. The applicants to Track I must have a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher and an ACT score of 24 or greater. Additionally, they have to complete observation hours with a physical therapist, write an essay, and complete an interview.
"The applicants to Track I have a lot of excitement for the profession of physical therapy," Dr. Ehrmann said. "All of them have also been very involved in high school activities such as sports, band, or service organizations. They will bring a lot of our program, but also to St. Ambrose as a whole." She added that the average high school GPA of the Track I applicants was 3.89 and the average ACT score was 27.5. Up to 15 students are accepted into Track I each year.
