New Class: PLA 201 Prior Learning Assessment

August 2011

The ACCEL Program was initially designed over 15 years ago to address the need of adult students returning to school to complete a bachelor's degree, and we understand that there are many experiences that adult students bring with when returning to the classroom. Therefore, the prior learning portfolio option is designed to assist students in earning college credit for knowledge gained through work, training, volunteer, or personal experiences.

Recently, a new course was added to the fall 2011 schedule to serve this population. PLA 201: Prior Learning Assessment is geared toward students who are considering the submission of a portfolio as a method for earning credits toward their degree. This is a new, non-credit course which introduces adult learning theory and how these theories can be used to reflect on learning that occurred outside the classroom.

In this course, students will develop a portfolio which can be submitted for credit review, and then a faculty member will evaluate the portfolio and either grant or deny credit, request additional information, or arrange a personal interview. Subsequent portfolios may be submitted thereafter without enrolling in PLA 201 again; however, course completion does not guarantee that experiential learning credits will be granted.
