Remembering Dr. Mark Brand

On Tuesday, Aug. 9, Department of Marketing Studies Assistant Professor Dr. Mark Brand lost his long and courageous battle with cancer. Chosen as 2011 Faculty Member of the Year, Dr. Brand was respected for his dedication, enthusiasm and bravery in the face of difficult life circumstances.

"Dr. Brand has been a phenomenal teacher and inspiration ... has a great commitment to all of his students, giving personal attention to anyone who needs it," said one student who nominated him for the award. "It seems he must spend the rest of his time (outside the classroom) preparing lessons, because he is always ready to bring information to us in new, interesting and personal ways. Knowing he was coping with cancer, I marveled at Dr. Brand's showing up in the classroom, dedicated and prepared, when most people would have had a difficult time making it into their living room."

"It is not hard to see why Dr. Brand is such a phenomenal individual, inside and outside of the classroom," said another student. "His charisma is so enlightening and his enthusiasm for the course material helps students to easily grasp the necessity of the information at hand. I have (also) come to understand the importance of others through learning (about) new cultures and serving those in need. I have so much respect for Dr. Brand."


A member of the St. Ambrose University College of Business faculty since 2009, Dr. Brand was a passionate mentor and teacher. Just this past May, he was chosen for "Faculty Member of the Year" recognition by St. Ambrose students.

Dr. Brand began his career in communications working for a several political candidates, notably handling presidential campaign advance for Congressman Morris "Mo" Udall, Senator Walter Mondale, Senator Ted Kennedy, and President Jimmy Carter. He also worked for the Department of Transportation under Jimmy Carter. His career then led him into the private sector where he was a public relations specialist for the GD Searle Company, United Airlines, AMGEN Biotechnology and USA Track and Field. At age 50, he chose to change his career and become an academician. Shortly thereafter he completed his doctoral studies in marketing.

Dr. Brand earned his bachelor's degree from American University, a master's degree in public administration from the University of Southern California, and his doctorate from Touro University International in California.

Survivors include his wife Maxine, daughter Rachel, and daughter Ali and son-in-law Noam.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Israel Study Abroad Program, c/o John Byrne, St. Ambrose University Marketing Department; or to Temple Emanuel; or to a charity of choice.
