Now that we're officially into cold weather, Midwesterners are apt to start socializing inside rather than out. St. Ambrose has just the solution to those winter weather blues: Trivia Nights. But if you're not familiar with this pasttime, you might be the only one.

"Last January we had 460 people-the highest attendance we've ever had at Trivia Night," said Angie Bardsley '09, assistant director of alumni relations and special projects. "It's always quite competitive and definitely exciting."

Trivia Night provides brainy fun in the cold winter months and also raises money for the Children's Campus and the Father Welch Scholarship.

Rest assured that trivia-goers are not all trivia ‘geeks.' There are plenty of players secretly disguised as foodies.

"It's like a mini-potluck," Bardsley said. "When I talk to people about the Trivia Nights, the conversation goes something like, ‘Who's bringing this and that, and we need dessert!"

Earning a reputation as one of the better-organized trivia games in the Quad Cities, it has grown into an event that attracts a lot of people to campus.

"This is not just an alumni event," Bardsley said. "This is a university event that brings people to campus, and we get the chance to raise money for two great causes."

BEE Happy Hour

For the past four years, mini-reunions in locations across the country have been bringing together more than 200 Ambrosians.

It's a simple idea that caught on rather quickly. At as many as 12 locations around the country, all at the same time, people have raised their glasses to toast St. Ambrose.

"At the very first year's event, there were some alums who wanted to know when the next Bee Happy Hour was scheduled!" said Alumni Director Amy Hoover Jones '02. "This year we're hosting the event on June 21, and we expect an even bigger turnout." This year's locations will be announced in the spring.

Give-aways and door prizes are an incentive to attend, but Jones has found that no matter where people live, they are always looking for a reason to mingle and share stories and memories about St. Ambrose.

"It's fun to be in a room full of people-halfway across the country from Davenport-and share something in common that is so important to everyone there."
