First Jurevitz Award

December 2011

With 13 members of the family of the late Bob Jurevitz '86 looking on, the former standout SAU running back's widow, Tracey, presented the first annual Bob Jurevitz Award to senior football defensive back John Michaletti at the Dec. 11 Fall Sports Award banquet.

The award will be present annually to the football player who exemplifies the characteristics of leadership, team-first play and toughness Bob Jurevitz showed on the football field and in his life, coach Mike Magestrelli said.

"John is an outstanding player, but, more importantly, he is an outstanding person, teammate and leader," Magistrelli said of the senior from Rock Island Alleman. "He is one of the hardest working players I have had the privilege of coaching.

Michaletti's name is now the first on a plaque inside the Lee Lohman Arena lobby, which will be updated every year to list the all-time recipients of the award.

The award was created in the summer. Jurevitz died in November after a lengthy battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

Along with the Bob Jurevitz Award, the Champions of Character for each fall sport were announced based on five core values - integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.
