Coming off a runner-up NAIA National Volleyball Championship season in 2011, the St. Ambrose men's volleyball team has been voted the nation's No. 1 team in a preseason poll of coaches and administrators.
The Fighting Bees fell in three sets to Califiornia Baptist in last year's national title match at Lee Lohman Arena. Coach Bill Gleeson earned Coach of the Year honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association in the wake of SAU's 30-6 season. AVCA All-Americans Dan Dowjotas, a senior, and Kyle Schwertz, a junior, both return this year.
Dowjotas, a two-time All-American outside hitter, led St. Ambrose with 495 kills–an average of four per set–and finished with a .279 attack percentage. He was also second on the team in digs with 194 and finished third on the Bees with 70 total blocks (including 18 solo blocks) and 16 service aces.
Schwetz,a 6-foot-5 middle hitter, led St. Ambrose with 112 total blocks, including 17 solo blocks. He was second with 231 kills and 22 service aces.
The Bees won the MAMVIC East Conference regular season and tournament championships last year.
