KCACTF's unsung hero: Becky Seward

February 2012

Each year in the Irene Ryan Acting Competition, nominees can use musical scenes/monologues as well as non-singing scenes. For the musical scenes at this year's festival, SAU students had the luxury of having our very own staff accompanist and SAU alum, Becky Seward '78, who studied Music Education. Along with being available to accompany our three Irene Ryan nominees, Seward also was hired by eight nominees from other schools.

Seward was also asked to accompany for the Professional Auditions, an all-day event allowing students to audition for multiple theatre companies looking to cast their summer stock seasons as well as other positions. She also played for a workshop featuring Lynne Rothrock, a professional musician who gave advice on song interpretation for the workshop's attendees.

"My favorite part was playing for the professional auditions," said Seward. "Through them, I'm introduced to music and musicals I was previously unfamiliar with."

But what makes her time and efforts truly worth it for Seward is working with the students. "It is really interesting to see the talents from other schools," she said, "and they are all so polite and friendly!"

Thank you so much for everything you do for our department, Becky!
