Annie Smith has needed only three seasons to close in on a St. Ambrose women's basketball record that has stood for 21 years.
Smith will become the new SAU queen of shot-blocking if she can knock back a pair of attempts when the Queen Bees host Viterbo at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Smith, a Davenport Assumption graduate, joined the Queen Bees in 2009 after a season at Southwest Minnesota State. She is on the verge of breaking a record of 175 career swats set by Cindy Born from 1988-1991.

Also noted in Tuesday's Times, Dan Dowjotas, a senior outside hitter for the top-ranked St. Ambrose men's volleyball team was named NAIA National Player of the Week after averaging 4.57 kills in wins last week over No. 9 Cardinal Stritch and fourth-ranked Missouri Baptist. In addition, sophomore bowler Aretha Williams won the Midwest Collegiate Conference tournament over the weekend while men's bowlers Kyle Anderson, a freshman, and Bryan Thompson, a junior, earned all MCC honors. Finally, senior Mandy Streu won MCC field athlete of the week winning her fourth straight indoor conference championship in the shot put and finishing third in the weight throw.
