The Prenzie Players, a local theatre group in Rock Island soon will be staging their production of "Titus Andronicus" by William Shakespeare, and SAU alum Catie Osborn '10 is involved!
The main plotline of "Titus" revolves around Titus and his cycle of revenge. Osborn plays Titus' daughter, Lavinia, and says it has been one of the most challenging, but rewarding, experiences she has ever had.
"It has been a long, long rehearsal process--in the best way possible. I am astounded at how much progress has been made in such a short amount of time" says Osborn.
Osborn says one of the best things about working with the Prenzie is all the collaboration. Not only is she acting in show, but she also is involved with costuming and helped set up the lighting. One aspect Osborn has found that is different from most of her experiences at SAU is the type of character she is playing.
"I am playing a dramatic, ingénue role," she said. "That's still so weird for me. I'm used to being the funny neighbor, and so it has been a big adjustment trying to find the emotional realism within all of the drama."
Even with this seemingly huge difference from previous shows, Osborn still has found many similarities to her experiences at SAU. The biggest similarity is the level of trust and camaraderie she has formed with her fellow castmates.
She also uses the training she received at SAU and feels so much more prepared because of her education.
"I think the training and work ethic instilled in me at Ambrose is what is helping me to succeed in this show," Osborn said. "It's a huge role and very demanding, and it would be very easy to let the physical violence and awful-ness carry me, but I very much believe (thanks to Cory and Mike and Kris and Dan) that it's the work you put in OUTSIDE OF rehearsal that makes what you do at rehearsal count. The amount of research and time I have put into this role borders on obsessive, but I care very much about this character and this show, and doing research on the awful things that happen is a good way of getting into the mind of Lavinia and behind the story of the show."
"Titus" will be performed at the Stern Center (formerly Hyman's Furniture), 1713 3rd Ave., Rock Island April 1 at 2 p.m. and April 5-7 at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $10, which you can purchase by calling (309) 738-8364, or email. There is also a college night April 4 with half price tickets and discussions after the show.
Also, Catie will be directing "Antigone" next year with Prenzie.
"I'm excited," she said. "It's going to kick butt."
We'll definitely have to keep our eyes open for that!
