Senior Spotlight: Val Zawada

October 2012

Hometown: Geneva, IL

Previous productions: Dakota Jones and the Search for Atlantis, A New Brain, Lady Windermere's Fan, The Drowsy Chaperone, Oedipus Rex, A Year with Frog and Toad, and several one-acts. I have also directed Touch in the studio theatre.

Latest Project: Directing Beauty and the Beast at Davenport Junior Theatre

Favorite show and why: Oedipus Rex. I am still discovering things we learned through putting up that show. It was such an interesting process, and of course performing at KCACTF was an experience I will always treasure.

Someone who inspires you: Actually, everyone around me. There is so much kindness and love that I am surrounded by, it's hard not to be anything but grateful for where I am.

Advice for new students: Do everything that you can. It may seem like acting in a main stage show is the most important thing, but there is much to be learned in the theatre world of Ambrose, be it designing, working backstage, stage managing or anything else related to a show!

Favorite memory of SAU Theatre: Probably performing in Frog and Toad freshman year because so many new friendships came out of that show. It was the first time I felt included and a part of our department, plus the cast was so talented. I looked up to them a lot and still do.

If you could thank anyone right now who would it be and why: My parents and my professors. I have gained so much knowledge from them and feel the support from their love every single day!

Your proudest accomplishment: Being hired as a director at Davenport Junior Theatre. It has so far been my biggest step forward into adult life, and in my career.

What is something that always motivates you: Empathy, and the things we can learn from people. Every new show, and new encounter brings something into my life- and in order to experience that, I have to keep moving forward.

If you could meet anyone right now who would it be and why: Stephen Hawking. He has a brilliant mind, and is an extraordinary individual. Also, he has my secret secondary dream job. Theoretical physicists rock.

What are you most excited about for your senior year: All the good times and memories to come, and my continued educational journey. Oh yeah and my last KCACTF: Bring it on Nebraska!
