Senior Spotlight: Stephanie Seward

February 2013

Name: Stephanie Seward

Hometown: Bettendorf, Iowa

Major: Theatre/French

Previous SAU Productions? Pippin, Seussical Jr., Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, A Year with Frog and Toad, Stage Manager for The Glass Menagerie, Sexual Perversity in Chicago, The Drowsy Chaperone, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, Lady Windermere's Fan, A New Brain, Dakota Jones and the Search for Atlantis, The Plagiarists, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Alice in Wonderland, Almost Maine

What was your favorite role, and why? Janet Van de Graaff in The Drowsy Chaperone! She's so ridiculous and the show is hilarious, plus I got to act opposite one of my favorite people, Ross Epping. It was a blast.

Who inspires you? My parents. Their constant and undying support is amazing to me, and their faith in me inspires me to keep going when I go crazy. So dramatic, I know, but it's true.

What is your favorite play/musical and why? The Drowsy Chaperone!!! Which is another reason I was so stoked that SAU did it during my time here! It is so witty and the characters are so out there, and it just makes me smile and laugh and love everything.

What drew you to the Theatre and when? My parents again! They've both always been involved in theatre, so it was sort of a natural progression that I should also do it. Once I tried it, I was doomed... It's too fun to play someone else for a couple hours and now I can't stop.

What is your favorite memory of the Theater? That is a tough question, I say! But one of them was definitely the first performance of Seussical, Jr. I had never done a kids' show before, and I really had no idea how many kids were going to be there. THEY WERE EVERYWHERE. And they were so excited! Seeing them like that was really cool.

Any words of wisdom or advice for future Theatre patrons? Try everything! It's easy to pigeonhole yourself into one department whether it be acting, stage managing, etc. But the best part about being at a school our size is that you have every opportunity to try EVERYTHING at least once. So DO IT.

What will you miss the most about the SAU Theatre department? Constant immersion in shows. It's not quite as simple out in the real world, I think.

What are your plans after graduation? Not entirely sure! I love performing and would like to continue, but I've also taken an interest in arts education. So mostly I'll be figuring out what it is I really want to do and how to do it all. I'm in no rush to figure it out and I can't wait to see what the future holds.
