The SAU Theatre Department is proud to announce the 8th Michael Kennedy Scholar, Nicholas N.B. Pearce of Iowa City, Iowa. The recipient of this award must be declared a theatre major and have a strong dedication to work ethic and humor. Pearce said he feels honored to be a Kennedy Scholar.
"It feels fantastic! I found out I was the eighth student to receive it, which is really cool," he said.
He would like to thank his theatre director at West High School in Iowa City, Katy Nahra.
"She's given me so much, from my first role with lines to the recommendation letter for the scholarship. She's always been an example of the best way to be a boss, teacher, and a friend," Pearce said.
Pearce began his involvement in theatre as early as fifth grade. He played a camel in a skit about living in a desert, and distinctly remembers his one line: "honk." Since then, he has played Ernie in It's a Wonderful Life and Dewey in Legally Blonde. His dream role is to play Nicely-Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls.
"Since I saw the movie, I've always liked the character, and I think he's just the right mix of good guy, bad guy, and funny guy," Pearce remarked.
Pearce looks forward to studying theatre. He enjoys entertaining people, but is also drawn by the social factor.
"Making a production is one of the best ways to get to know people. I've had some of the best experiences and met some of my best friends from shows I've been in," Pearce said.
And why did Pearce decide on Ambrose?
"I like SAU because it has an awesome mascot, great dorms, and a fantastic theatre department. It seems like the best place to spend college and figure out how to spend the rest of my life."
