Model UN Conference

12/06/2013

The SAU Model UN (MUN) Society gives students a a unique opportunity to to explore-and address-a wide range of current global issues including international conflicts, terrorism, nuclear weapons, HIV/AIDS, human rights, poverty, trade, energy, globalization and the environment.

Following months of preparation, MUN "delegates" represent their assigned country at the annual American Model United Nations Conference. This year, SAU MUN represented the Democratic People's Republic of Korea during the Chicago, Illinois, conference.

"It was definitely a challenge representing the DPRK," reported Robyn Kincaid, international studies major. "There weren't very many nations willing to work with us, which was kind of an eye-opener. As Americans, we are used to taking advantage of our superpower status and large number of Western allies."

"I had a lot of fun," added Chris Hollis, international studies and Spanish major. "I learned a tremendous amount and it was an irreplaceable experience. I had to put myself into a completely opposite position and defend it with gusto, which I think is an invaluable experience and inexplicably fun. I'll never forget the experience and I encourage anybody and everybody interested, to give it a try."

SAU MUN received both a Certificate of Accomplishment award for excellent representation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, as well as a Certificate of Accomplishment for its well-written position papers.

A total of 11 SAU students served on six different General Assembly committees:

The General Plenary: Joe Cordogan (History) and Jordan Meier (International Studies)
The First Committee: Chris Hollis and David Anderson (Finance & Marketing)
The Second Committee: Natividad Hirsch (International Studies) and Colleen Shabunas (International Studies)
The Third Committee: Beth Berg (Political Science) and Robyn Kincaide
The Fourth Committee: Sophia Foreman (Psych) and Hannah Bates (Communication)
The Special Peacekeeping Committee: Jordan Light (Political Science)

In addition, Caroline Thome (Political Science) fulfilled the role of team leader/permanent representative, and Jordon Williams (Political Science & History) served on the International Court of Justice. Grace Bruett (History) was an International Press Delegate and published multiple articles in American Model United Nations Chronicle.

Next year, SAU Model UN Society will represent Ghana.

The group is advised by Duk Kim, Ph.D., director of international studies and assistant professor of political science and leadership studies.
