SAU Students Perform in ComedySportz

12/06/2013

Junior Brooke Schelly, and first-year students Sam Jones and Jackson Green, are enjoying their work with the ComedySportz improv troupe in Rock Island.

ComedySportz is short form improv, which means skits are usually less than five minutes.

During each family-friendly performance, two teams compete against each other-with comedy-to win the audience's votes. At the end of the night, the team with the most points wins. Teams play a variety of games: head-to-head, team, singing, and more. There are Major and Minor leagues, with the Majors having more experienced performers.

Each Friday, the Major league players perform at 7 p.m. and the Minors at 9:30 p.m. ComedySportz takes place at the Establishment Theatre in Rock Island, Ill. Tickets are $3-$12 and can be purchased at the door or online.

While talking about the process ComedySportz uses, Green said, "We begin by engaging in some warm-up games and fun activities. We practice by playing games that we do in our performances. We focus on establishing character and moving the plot forward."

"ComedySportz has been a blast!" said Schelly. "I've learned so much in the past few weeks. We've delved deep into character work and into the inner workings of the improv world. The ComedySportz family is so welcoming and so supportive. I look forward to everything I'll be learning."

Sophomore Jordan McGinnis attended a performance of ComedySportz and said it was a fun and family-oriented experience. "It was fun seeing my classmates in a different setting than I usually do," said McGinnis. "They did a wonderful job."
