Mock Trial Report 2014

04/14/2014

Successful mock trial season culminates with qualifying for and competing in the 1st round of the national championship series: On October 19, 2013, St. Ambrose compiled a 4-0 record at the Quad Cities Invitational, earning us the second place trophy. On October 26th, the team took third place at Quincy University; remaining undefeated. St. Ambrose hosted its first invitational mock trial tournament.

In addition to the SAU team, other college participants included Luther College, Central College, and Northern Illinois University. The St. Ambrose team placed second, with a 4-0 record. SAU award winners included Caleb Copley (best attorney) and Tyler Waugh (best witness). Several of our alumni generously offered their time to serve as judges including Jennifer (Kislia) Kinkaid '03, Sarah Gorham '10, Joshua McIntyre '08, and Meena Brandt '11.

The team tied for 8th place at the University of Iowa with a 4-4 record. Caleb Copley picked up an attorney award (his third of the season), and Tyler Waugh picked up a witness award (his second of the season).

After a slow period, the Mock Trial team finished the regular season with a bang. After a disappointing 3-5 performance at St. Francis University on January 14-15, on the following weekends the team went 4-3-1 at Central College and 2-0-2 at the Loras National Invitational.

At the February 8-9 AMTA Regional Tournament Rapids, the team overcame a 1-3 start with 2-0 victories over University of Notre Dame and University of Iowa to finish 5-3, gaining the 8th place Honorable Mention and tying with Notre Dame for the Spirit of AMTA award (given for integrity and fair play). For the first time since the 2005-2006 season, the team received an open bid to the AMTA Opening Round Championship Series, held this year at Waukegan, Illinois, on March 14 to 16. While not moving on to the National finals, the team fought hard, learned through this intense competition, and brought this successful season to an end.

The 2013-2014 SAU Mock Trial team members included: Team Captain Caleb Copley, Tyler Waugh, Logan Hanley, Whitney Bowton, Joe Dillion, Alexa Thompson, Mario Vega, Alyssa Daniel, and Paige Wheeler, Cole McKinnon.

The Coaching staff consisted of Head Coach Henry Marquard and assistant coaches Josh McIntyre '08 and Elizabeth Marquard.
