The SAU Theatre Department is proud to announce the ninth Michael Kennedy Scholar, Kayla Lansing from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The recipient of this award must be a declared theatre major and have a strong dedication to work ethic and humor. To say Lansing is excited to be a Kennedy Scholar would be an understatement.
"I am absolutely overjoyed and so excited! I never dreamed that I would actually get this scholarship when I applied, and when I found out I just about fell over," Lansing said. "I cannot wait to participate in such a phenomenal theatre program."
Lansing got the theatre bug from her first audition in middle school, and hasn't been able to shake it since. Some of the roles she has played include Sister Margaretta from The Sound of Music, Chiffon from Little Shop of Horrors, and the Mouse in Cinderella. Her dream role is to play Elle Woods in Legally Blonde the Musical or any part in Godspell.
Lansing loves theatre, and wants to share her love for it with others.
"Onstage is the perfect place for someone to come out of their shell and to try new things, and I think that everyone should be able to discover and enjoy themselves through theater," Lansing said.
Why Ambrose? Lansing said she noticed the sense of community and students' happiness.
"I enjoyed Ambrose on my first visit, but my second visit sealed the deal," she said. "As I was sitting in the theatre waiting for scholarship auditions, there were so many people that came up and wished me good luck and said that they hoped they would see me next year."
And luckily, they will.
