DPT Class of 2013: Graduates and Awards

06/19/2014

Congratulations to the 34 students who graduated from the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program in December.

It was a busy weekend for the graduates and their families. On Friday night, the graduates were recognized for their accomplishments with a reception and dinner.

Katie Carberry and Carrie Tope were chosen by their classmates to provide the student perspective on graduation. The Class of 2013 chose Liz Arp, PT, DPT for the special recognition award in appreciation of her commitment to teaching and clinical practice. Liz serves as a teaching assistant in the Neuromuscular Therapeutics course and as a clinical instructor for many of the students.

Maggie Kilburg received the Joy Michelsen Award in recognition of her desire to work in the pediatrics setting and her successes during her pediatric internship. The faculty recognized Katie Carberry with the Student Scholarship Award.

On Saturday morning, graduation attendees witnessed a sea of bright gyms shoes as the DPT students walked across the stage of the River Center to received their doctoral hoods. In a show of unity for their classmate, Alyssa Curtis, who is recovering from surgery to treat brain cancer, the Class of 2013 wore gyms shoes. Because of Alyssa's ankle foot orthosis she would be unable to wear heels at graduation and she was worried how it would appear. Her classmates didn't want her to feel uncomfortable, so they all wore gym shoes. A full story about this and the fundraiser the Class of 2013 planned for Alyssa was featured throughout the St. Ambrose University community.

In January, all 34 graduates sat for the National Physical Therapy Examination and all the students received a passing score on their first attempt. The 100% first time pass rate for the Class of 2013 is above the national and state average of 90% and 95% respectively. Congratulations to the DPT Class of 2013, the faculty and staff are very proud of you!
