07/31/2014

The Hon. Celeste Bremer '74, chief magistrate of the US District in the Southern District of Iowa, will be presented a pair of prestigious awards this month for her work toward achieving gender equality in the federal court system.

On Aug. 6, Judge Bremer will receive the Diana Murphy Legacy Award at the Infinity Summit in Omaha, Neb. The award is given by the Infinity Project and will be presented to Judge Bremer in recognition of her efforts to expand the number of qualified applicants to the federal bench, chiefly focusing her attention on the federal judicial selection process within the 8th Circuit. The honor also recognizes her work to champion issues relating to gender fairness in the courts.

On Aug, 23, the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women will award Judge Bremer the Cristine Wilson Medal for Equality and Justice. The presentation will take place during the annual Women's Equality Day event at the Iowa Historical Building. Judge Bremer joins an impressive list of Wilson Medal honorees who have worked to support Iowa's founding principles of equality and justice. Judge Bremer is being recognized for her work to increase diversity on Iowa's courts, and to increase transparency in the judicial selection process.

Judge Bremer is the wife of Bill Hennan '75 and the mother of Dianne Hennan '09.
