Alumni Spotlight: Andrew Benson

10/09/2014

What was your major? I received a major in Theatre and a minor in Management.

What year did you graduate? I graduated in 2011.

What are you doing currently? Currently, I am completing the first year of a two-year artistic fellowship with St. Croix Festival Theatre in St. Croix, Wisc. I perform a variety of artistic duties for them including arts education, acting, directing, choreographing, and costume design. Along with this, I manage the front office and sales department of a Holiday Inn Express.

What did you do after graduation? After graduating, I moved to New York City where I worked for a Broadway sound design company while auditioning. I also performed in my one-man cabaret, Andrew Bradford Benson is Losing His Mind. Soon afterwards  I started to look for work in the Twin Cities area and found Festival Theatre.

What was your favorite memory from Ambrose? My favorite memory from my time at St. Ambrose is performing Oedipus Rex at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

What do you miss most about the department? The thing that I miss most about the department are the professors. Their support and knowledge are things that I appreciated then and still utilize to this day.

How do you keep inspired in your workplace? I believe that the work Festival Theatre is doing is vitally important to the community we reside in. For some people we present the only outlet they have to see a live production. This inspires me to do my best work on each show we produce.

What was your biggest post-SAU surprise? My biggest post-SAU surprise is where I have found home. I thought that I would spend many years living in New York, however, looking back at the past few years, I can't imagine having spent them anywhere other than Wisconsin.

What is your advice to current students? My advice to current students is to work as hard as you possibly can. The SAU Theatre Department gives students a wonderful opportunity to become theatre artists who are knowledgeable in many areas, which makes them extremely desirable employees in the professional world.
