Study Abroad Spotlight: Meet Caitlin Cronin

Student in Ireland

January 2015

Hometown: Chicago
Major: Psychology/Pre-OT
Minor: Honors
Where did you study abroad? Carlow, Ireland
How long where you there? One semester, 3 1/2 months

Why did you choose to study abroad in Ireland?
I chose this program because a friend had mentioned it to me. She told me that she had studied in Carlow and had an amazing time. I also could take Anatomy there so it worked out for my major.

What is your favorite memory?
Traveling around Ireland and Europe and getting to visit places that I had only ever dreamed of was absolutely amazing! Also, getting to know the girls I lived with led to some really funny and great memories.

How did your experience abroad impact you as a person?
I definitely changed during the semester. I became more independent having to cook and shop for myself. I also matured a lot and learned so much about myself (good and bad things) and learned so much about life in general. I gained a deeper appreciation for other cultures and I have a more worldly view of things. I also got bit by the travel bug and will visit Ireland again one day.

What advice would you give to other students thinking about studying abroad?
I would highly encourage someone thinking about studying abroad to do it because they will not regret it. I wasn't planning on studying abroad, and when my friend first suggested it, I said no. When she mentioned it again about a week later, I thought about it and said why not?! I was nervous to go to Ireland because I did not know what to expect, but I am so glad I went! I could not imagine my life now without studying abroad. I learned so much about myself and my life. I am forever grateful for this opportunity!
