Mock Trial 2014-15 Report

04/15/2015

The season got off to a great start Oct. 11 with a third place finish and 4-0 record at the St. Ambrose Quad City Open. Tyler Waugh received a best attorney award, Jordan McGinnis a best witness award, and Alexa Thompson honorable mention for best attorney.

Later that month, the team went 4-4 at the Drake University Tournament on October 25 and 26. Tyler Waugh took home a best attorney award.

Unfortunately, the team posted a losing record at the Illinois State University Tournament on November 15 and 16 against very heavy competition, including Ohio State and the host, Illinois State University.

The Mock Trial Team returned to action Jan. 16 at the University of Illinois Tournament. The team's 3-5 record was a great result, especially since two of our veterans couldn't attend and three of the losses were by one point. Tyler Waugh received an outstanding attorney award, and newcomer Taelor Cooper received an outstanding witness award.

The following weekend the team went to Tampa, Florida, for Florida team scrimmages and a workshop.

The team took second place at the prestigious Loras National Invitational Tournament on January 30 and 31 with a 7-1 record. Tyler Waugh and Alexa Thompson took home outstanding attorney awards, and Allyssa Daniel took home an outstanding witness award.

The season ended with disappointing losses (to the teams that finished 1st, 2nd and 4th) at the AMTA Regional in Cedar Rapids on February 21 and 22. It was still a successful season and one that we are proud of.

For the 2015-16 season, we won't have this year's seniors Tyler Waugh (captain), Alexa Thompson, Paige Wheeler, Mario Vega and Logan Hanley. Their contribution to the Mock Trial Program cannot be overstated, and the Mock Trial Team extends its congratulations and thanks to them.

In preparation for next year, we hosted the Davenport Regional in March for the Iowa High School Mock Trial Tournament, welcoming 12 high school teams to our campus. Joe Dillon and Alyssa Daniel will serve as co-captains for next year with practices starting this spring.
