The St. Ambrose University Theatre Department is kicking off the start of their season with Parade! This heart-wrenching musical is based on the historical case and lynching of Leo Frank.
In 1913, Leo Frank, a Brooklyn-raised Jew living in Georgia, was put on trial for the murder of 13-year-old Mary Phagan, a factory worker employed by Leo. Already guilty in the eyes of everyone around him, a sensationalist publisher and a janitor's false testimony sealed Leo's fate. His only defenders were a governor with a conscience, and, eventually, his assimilated Southern wife who found the strength and love to become his greatest champion. This tragic story is about love and hope even in the face of religious, political, and racial injustice.
This year marks the 100-year anniversary of this controversial event. Parade was written by Alfred Uhry with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown. It has received Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Original Score. The show will be directed by Daniel Rairdin-Hale, who has recently become the new chair of the Theatre Department. The show contains a large cast which will be posted in next month's edition! Come see this powerful and moving show!
The performance dates are Friday, October 9 and Saturday, October 10 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 11 at 3 p.m.
Part of the College of Arts and Sciences 2015 annual project series, The Justice Project.
