Theatre Picnic Fall 2015

09/04/2015

On August 26 the Theatre Department and Daniel Rairdin-Hale (in his first year as chair) hosted their annual picnic.

It was a great time to reunite with old faces and meet some new ones! First Year student Hannah Donovan met the man for which her new scholarship was named: Michael Kennedy. Then, the Kennedy scholars from the last three years (Shannon Rourke, Nick Pearce, and Kayla Lansing) met Hannah and took a picture with Michael Kennedy.

As people filed in, upper classmen met new students and the new students were able to meet all the faculty members. It was quite a sight to see: a little under 100 people all here because of a love or interest in theatre - and the free food.

The food was different than years before; it was not pizza. Rairdin-Hale wanted to serve food that might actually be served at a picnic since we do call it the theatre picnic, and he wanted some healthier more exciting options. So, there were little triangle sandwiches, soup and bread from Greatest Grains, cantaloupe, grapes, salad, and cookies from East Side Bakery. The new food went over well, especially the cookies!

During the picnic, Rairdin-Hale started things off by introducing all of the Theatre faculty members. He had a presentation to go along with what people talked about the entire night. And Matt Elliott made spotlights so there were three places people could stand on the stage and a light would be brought up on them as they talked. It was cool seeing a more theatrical set-up at a theatre picnic!

Cory Johnson, as she takes her sabbatical this semester, came to the picnic to talk about Hedda Gabler that she will be directing at the start of second semester. She also talked about the Theatre in Ireland class that will be offered second semester. Students will have the opportunity to take a class and learn about theatre in Ireland and then actually go to Ireland for two weeks following May graduation and see firsthand what they have been learning during class. Students, this seems like the opportunity of a lifetime! Don't miss out!

Kim Furness also spoke about the upcoming show she is guest directing, Junie B. Jones: Jingle Bells Batman Smells. She is very excited about it. She is also teaching Performing for the Camera this semester that she is equally as excited about!

Eileen Eitrheim talked about all of the events that are coming to Galvin this year for the Performing Arts Series. There are some incredibly cool performers coming. Check out the Galvin website for more info on that!

Finally, students voted who would make up the 2015 Callboard: senior Shannon Rourke, junior Sam Jones, sophomore Kayla Lansing, and two First Year students (it was a tie!): Evan Wood and Rebecca Moews.

This looks to be an incredibly exciting year and we can't wait to get started!
