Summer 2015 Theatre Plans

"Summertime, and the livin' is easy..." -Porgy and Bess

Students look forward to summer all year and can't wait to be able to relax and take a break from classes, meetings, and rehearsals ... unless you're a theatre student, that is. Theatre kicks into high gear during the summer and the SAU students are no exception to this rule.

This past summer a few students kept it close to home and interned in the scene shop with Matt Elliot and Kris Eitrheim. Learning various technical skills and basics of the backstage world of theatre, Senior Becca Brazel and Juniors Jackson Green and Max Moline had equal parts work and play to ensure that they learned all they could from the masters of the Galvin stage.

Their work included helping the technical aspect of many acts that come through Galvin in the summer, as well as building the set for the first Studio Theatre show, Jerry Finnegan's Sister, directed by Junior Sam Jones. Jones came back to Galvin several weeks before classes started, as did his cast, Junior Jordan Webster-Moore and Senior Amelia Fischer; stage managers Helene Devine and Christian Colmenares; and designers Zach Meyer, Kelci Eaton, Jackson Green, Max Moline and Jordan McGinnis. They wanted to ensure the show was performance-ready for the shows in early September.

Many students used their skills elsewhere and explored theatre in their own communities. Senior Shannon Rourke assisted in the stage management of a production of The Birds at the Griffin Theatre in Chicago. Junior Kelci Eaton also explored community theatre over the summer in Legally Blonde.

For some, home wasn't far away, and SAU students took advantage of the opportunities available to them in the Quad Cities. Senior Amelia Fischer was involved in a community production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Senior Michael Byrne appeared on the Quad Cities Music Guild's stage in Mary Poppins. Hanna Murray, current cast member of Parade, was involved in Countryside Community Theatre's performance of Big Fish. Senior Jordan McGinnis showed off his chops in A Few Good Men at the District Theatre in Rock Island.

All in all, St. Ambrose students proved that they are just as busy when they are not in school and made their mark on community summer theatre. Now that a new year is starting, it's time to show everyone just what you learned this summer!
