Standing out with an MOL degree

December 2015

Undergraduate Degree: BA, Communication, St. Ambrose University

CJ Morton recently returned to school after 15 years – graduate school, that is. Desiring a program that would make him stand out from his colleagues, CJ enrolled in the Master of Organizational Leadership program this fall.

Working at John Deere, CJ has plenty of fellow employees who have their MBA degree, but CJ wanted to differentiate himself from the pack.

"The MOL program is a perfect fit to help advance my career and learn how to be a better leader – and follower – at John Deere and the organizations where I volunteer," Morton said. "I want to implement positive, adaptive changes from the inside out."

CJ started out taking MBA classes at the University of Iowa, but several issues prevented his success there. At Ambrose, CJ found the fit he needed to excel and learn – personally and professionally. He rightly expected that composing his first paper after being out of the classroom for 10+ years would be difficult. The results were surprising – even to him.

"We covered four books over eight weeks," CJ said, "but my note-taking and the class discussions made writing so easy that I had to cut down the paper twice to meet the eight-page limit."

CJ's life as a graduate student is typical of many – if not most – graduate students at St. Ambrose. They arrive wanting some sort of change in their life, at work, or in their community. As an MOL student, CJ learned that change comes from within and then flows outward.

"I hope to help my company – and the volunteer organizations I support – move away from a rigid industrial paradigm to an organic, ever-evolving process that accomplishes the end goal of improving our communities."
