March 2016

Greetings colleagues,

Thank you for reading the most recent version of the St. Ambrose University School of Social Work Newsletter. We are thrilled to share the exciting undertakings of the School along with our students and community partners, both locally and globally.

In this issue, you will read about our 18th Annual Social Justice Conference featuring keynote speaker Dr. Pamela Lightsey. We expect to be intrigued and challenged through her presentation where she will focus on the complicated and nettlesome problem of racism against Black persons and reflect upon activism as a mechanism against oppression in general and racism in particular.

You will also have the opportunity to hear about some exciting parts of our MSW curriculum in this newsletter. Students traveled to India with Dr. Johny Augustine for our study-abroad course, Social Work Policy and Practice in Mental Health in India and the U.S., over Winterim 2015-16. Their experiences were memorialized in their blog (linked in the article) and described here. Also, we have highlighted a field agency where students are working in a collaborative and innovated health care setting and loving every minute of it!

Last, but not least, I would like to introduce Dr. Chris Martin, the newest addition to our Social Work faculty here at St. Ambrose. She has been a welcomed addition with her interests in social work practice across multiple settings, as well as her fascinating research in implicit racial bias. We have seen some recent retirements from the School (Brenda DuBois, Michael O'Melia, and this year Mike Jerin) and have lots of new faces for you to meet.

As usual, I am ever-so-proud and excited to share just a small snapshot of what we're up to in the School of Social Work at St. Ambrose. Feel free to contact us and let us know what you are up to at msw@sau.edu!

Take care,
Katherine Van Blair, PhD, MSW
Director and Professor, School of Social Work
