This past October, more than 600 physical therapists attended the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT) National Conference. This is considered the premier conference for physical therapists who focus on providing the highest level of musculoskeletal care through advance manual therapy techniques.

Among the attendees were St. Ambrose University Physical Therapy Department faculty, residents, and DPT students. Members of the department presented nine posters highlighting case reports completed by residents in the Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Clinical Residency Program and students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. St. Ambrose University had more posters at the conference than any other program from across the country. The poster titles and presenters are listed below.

ali colwell with poster"The sharing of case reports gives our residents the opportunity to highlight unique patient cases they have encountered and how they have used best practice guidelines and their education at St. Ambrose University to manage these situations," said Physical Therapy Department Director Michael Puthoff, PT, PhD, GCS.  "Students are taught how to listen to the patient, ask important questions, perform meaningful tests and then pull this information together to make hypotheses about how to help the patient. This education starts in the DPT program and expands into our residency program."

Kevin Farrell, Chair of the Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Clinical Residency Program, said he sees the value of students sharing their patient cases at a national conference.

"Presenting case reports provides a means to demonstrate how our students combine the best evidence available, their own experiences and the values of the patient to design a plan that will improve the human experience."

"When the residents present their case reports and have to defend their thought process to leaders from throughout the country, they learn so much," said Mark Levsen, Assistant Professor and the primary faculty member who teaches the orthopaedic curriculum to the DPT Students. "They leave feeling really good about their education and all the work they have put into their professional development."

The conference continues to be a valuable experience to learn about the practice area of manual therapy and interact with experts in the field. Since 2011, faculty and residents have presented 22 posters at the AAOMPT Annual Conferences. At this year's conference, the president of the International Federation of Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapists (IFOMPT) acknowledged both the number of posters from St. Ambrose University and the expansion of our program. Congratulations to all who presented and contributed to the success of the residency program.
