Guest director Ron Clark joins SAU for 'Richard III'

February 2017

ron clark"Now is the winter of our discontent" is what some may remark when they hear about St. Ambrose's upcoming production of Richard III, but because of guest director Ron Clark, it's soon to be a show that few will forget. St. Ambrose Theatre's latest guest director, fresh from working for five months in California and Colorado, will direct this Shakespearian classic for the Galvin mainstage in April.

Clark, who earned his MFA from the University of Iowa, says he is most looking forward to directing a production which "offers a wonderful opportunity to combine my three great passions: Shakespeare, storytelling, and teaching. We have an incredibly fine play with great depth of characters, so it's just a pretty great and challenging opportunity."

Clark and his wife, Jody Hovland, co-founded Riverside Theatre in Iowa City, Iowa, in 1981 before founding its offshoot, Riverside Theatre in the Park, in 2000. In his 34-year tenure with the company, he performed or directed in over 200 different productions, as well as writing or co-writing four original plays. Prior to starting work on Richard III, Clark directed When the Rain Stops Falling in San Luis Obispo, and before that he joined the Creede Repertory Theatre in Colorado, acting in the world premiere of The History Room.

SAU Theatre is excited to welcome Mr. Clark to the department!

Clark offered his insight into his hopes for Richard III at the cast and crew's first read-through this past week. In such a politically-charged time, it is his hope that we as artists can shed some light on a subject many Americans and people around the world are focusing on. What are the implications of having great power? Can this Shakespeare play, especially a historical one, still be relevant today? The cast and crew are very excited to get to work on this project and to share their voices with the community around them. All are highly encouraged to see this upcoming production!

The performances of Richard III are Apr. 21-22, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, April 23, at 3 p.m. Tickets $13 adults, $11 faculty/staff/alumni/senior citizens, $9 non-SAU students, $8 groups, although SAU students with current valid student ID are free.
