A Master of Science in Exercise Physiology (MSEP) will become St. Ambrose University's latest post-graduate degree program. The first cohort is scheduled to begin classes this fall.
The program addresses interest expressed by current Kinesiology students and recent alumni. An MSEP is an asset for those entering the field of exercise science, said Rhiannon Seneli, PhD, who developed the program proposal along with fellow Assistant Professor of Kinesiology Sandy Lund, PhD, former Assistant Professor Monica Taylor, PhD, and Professor Julia Moffitt, PhD.
Seneli said graduate degrees are required for many clinical positions, such as cardiovascular rehabilitation or exercise physiology.
"Health science careers are growing faster than any other segment of employment. Preventative medicine is being approached differently and is seen as a way to avoid major health crises, such as diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease, which is driving the need," she said.
Seneli said many undergraduates change their mind during their senior year about which health science field to pursue. The MSEP will allow the university to meet the needs of students wanting to refocus on exercise science. It will also help professionals who want to expand their skills.
