Athletics Menu Grows by Three

Opportunities to participate in collegiate athletics at St. Ambrose will grow by three in 2017. Men's and women's swimming and diving teams and a women's lacrosse team will debut in the fall.

"These are all great additions," said Sister Joan Lescinski, CSJ, PhD, president of the university. "There are a lot of young people out there who swim and dive, but they have limited opportunities to continue in their sport in college. Women's lacrosse is much the same. These sports will be additional attractions for students to come to St. Ambrose."

The swimming and diving teams will be led by 26-year coaching veteran Rob Miecznikowski, the 2015 Iowa High School Coach of the Year and a coach of two state championship boys teams at Iowa City West High School. Through an agreement with the Davenport School District, the SAU teams will make use of a newly opened swimming center a mile south of campus on the grounds of Central High School.

Garrett Wimberly, who assumed the reins of the SAU men's lacrosse team this past fall, also will coach the new women's team. Wimberly was the 2013 Deep South Conference Coach of the Year while coaching at the University of Memphis. He led his high school alma mater to a runner-up finish in the state tournament in his first year of coaching in 2012.

SAU lacrosse squads will compete at the new state-of-the-art St. Vincent's Athletic Complex.

The Fighting Bees now will field 26 athletics teams, with 12 men's and women's teams and two co-ed teams.
