Dustin Whetzler is the newest addition to the SAU theater department, and we are happy to have him. You may have come across his name in several of the programs for SAU's mainstage productions for stage crew, light board operator, and helping build the set. Dustin likes to spend his time behind-the-scenes and loves to help the process of the show grow.

Here is some more information on Dustin, his involvement in the department, and how he came to decide on his major.

How did you decide on St. Ambrose?
I decided to go to St. Ambrose because my wife Sherry is the Assistant Director of Residence Life and Housing.

What made you want to major in theatre?
I am a Marine Corps veteran who was diagnosed with PTSD. I was going to school for my BA when I took a Survey of Theatre class with Professor Hare. I got a chance to work in the scene shop and noticed it was easy for me to get into what I was doing and not think about the people moving behind me.

What is your favorite play/musical? Why?
Phantom of the Opera is and always will be my favorite. It is a musical that I saw as a young child. I have grown to like several other plays a lot, including Art by Yasmina Reza, Noises Off by Michael Frayn, and Rumors by Neil Simon.

What is your favorite part of the SAU Theatre Department?
I am a tech person, and that is my favorite part of the department. That being said, I do love the way that it is not just a pathway for the student and the teachers alike, but that it truly is more like a family.

How do you spend your time in the theatre department?
Right now I just help with the tech side and behind the scenes, but in time I will help with the design side. I would love to one day design a show for our main stage.

When do you plan on graduating from St. Ambrose?
I cannot say what year I plan on graduating. I am not a traditional student and my family takes up a large part of my time.

Who is the biggest influence in your life and why?
My biggest Influence in my life was my grandfather. I joined the Marine Corps because of him, and I would have stayed in if it was not for my injuries that forced me to get out. He was and is the most important man I know in my life.

Dustin is currently busy in the scene shop helping build the set for Richard III. Way to go Dustin! Keep up your hard work. With Dustin's enthusiasm and dedication to the department, we are excited to see how much he will continue to grow.
