The 2017 Galvins

April 2017

As the annual SAU Theatre Awards Banquet, The Galvins, continues to approach, it's time we examine all the preparations for the big event. Named for the building in which the theatre department is located, the Galvin Fine Arts Center, the event is hosted by the Theatre Department Call Board. The Call Board is comprised of student representatives from each year: Senior Sam Jones, junior Kayla Lansing, sophomore Hannah Donovan, and First Year TJ Green. Each has his or her own individual role to play in making the Galvins happen. Sam Jones is in charge of the majority of the event, and as a senior, he decides location, theme, food, and more.

As a reminder, The Galvins are Sunday, May 7 at Thunder Bay Grille in Davenport, with a buffet of beef stroganoff, penne pasta, fruit salad, rolls, green salad, mashed potatoes, baked mac and cheese, dessert, and more. This year there will also be a cash bar for those of age and tickets are $25/person. Tickets must be purchased in advance at the Galvin Fine Arts Box Office.

Kayla Lansing has the role of creating the senior salute. This portion of the event is meant to recognize all graduating seniors for their accomplishments over the years. She says she hopes it will show them how much we have all appreciated them and all they have contributed to the department.

"They've done so much for us and we want to recognize that!" she said. "They have changed the department for the better!"

It is very possible we will be seeing tears from everyone during this segment of the event.

Donovan has the task of reviewing the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) and designing the invitation. As a whole, the department participated in many events at KCACTF including Irene Ryans, musical theatre dance and singing intensives, professional auditions, tech team, the SDC scene competition, numerous workshops, and more. Highlighted this year will be the two Irene Ryan finalists: seniors Jordan Webster-Moore and Jordan McGinnis. Along with them will be senior Max Moline's SDC scene, which made it to finals and placed second in the Region (with huge help from his actors).

Of course, she'll have to mention our famous faculty member, Dr. Corinne Johnson and her winning of the Gold Medallion. Unfortunately, our tech team did not regain the title of champion and bring back the Golden Wrench, but they have big plans of taking it back next year! Donovan will include all of this and more in her presentation.

TJ Green has been given the large task of presenting the Year in Review. It will consist of a slideshow of pictures from each main stage production, studio theatre show, and other various theatre related events. If you haven't yet, you should send any photos you think would be relevant or helpful to creating this presentation to TJ Green.

You can buy your ticket at the box office or online at the Galvin website. The Galvins will take place Sunday, May 7. Again, the price is $25/person, so mark your calendars and keep checking in to make sure you don't miss your chance to come!
