Fresh Face Focus: Kyle Campbell

kyle

May 2017

Although he's a junior, Kyle Campbell recently jumped into his first mainstage production at the Galvin Fine Arts Center by serving as the assistant stage manager for Richard III. We sat down with Kyle to ask him the round of questions we give all new theatre bees.

How did you decide on St. Ambrose?
I spent a year at the University of Texas at Austin studying business and music but came back to Iowa after realizing neither was something I would be interested in pursuing. I liked the contrast a smaller school like Ambrose gave to a huge one like UT-Austin. The professors are much more approachable, and socially I like being able to see the same people in many of my classes.

What made you want to join in theatre?
I like watching movies and television in part to appreciate the acting. I joined theatre because I have a respect for the work actors do and was interested in trying it myself.

What is your favorite play/musical? Why?
I'm not sure if I could pick a favorite but maybe Glengarry Glen Ross. I'd say I enjoy shows with a more cynical or dark lens on how people think. I think it must be hard to be pessimistic as a playwright and still get work done.

What is your favorite part of the SAU Theatre Department?
I enjoy how kind and open the faculty is while still being harsh and honest as critics.

How do you spend your time in the theatre department?
I was assistant stage manager in the recent production of Richard III. I found it very interesting to watch the process the actors went through and how they took direction along the journey from table reading to opening night.

When do you plan on graduating from St. Ambrose?
Hopefully in 2018.

Who is the biggest influence in your life and why?
My twin brother Kevin is definitely my biggest influence. We constantly question each other and push each other to be better, different, or honest with ourselves.

SAU Theatre is glad to welcome Kyle, and we look forward to working with him in the future!
