SAU's 20 Scholar Teams Lead NAIA

July 2017

Fighting Bee student-athletes were nationally recognized for their achievement in the classroom when the NAIA announced St. Ambrose led the nation with 20 Scholar Teams.

Of the 21 eligible programs, 20 had a cumulative varsity GPA of 3.0 or better, which qualified the teams for the award. Three additional Fighting Bee programs in not-yet-fully-NAIA-sanctioned sports  — athletic band, men's bowling and women's bowling -— also had qualifying GPAs.

The SAU football team's 3.15 GPA was the third-highest mark among all NAIA football programs. The men's volleyball team finished fifth in its sport with a 3.11 GPA. The St. Ambrose women's basketball team, with an athletic-department best 3.63 GPA, was eighth among all NAIA Division II women's basketball programs.

Eleven of the 20 SAU Scholar Teams finished with GPAs of at least 3.25. Five of those teams — women's basketball, women's tennis, women's cross country, women's indoor track & field, and women's outdoor track & field — posted GPAs of better than 3.50.

The cumulative St. Ambrose varsity athlete GPA for the 2016-17 academic year was a 3.23.
