Engineering Programs Gain Accreditation

September 2017

ABETWe are pleased to announce that the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering has been reaccredited, and the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering has received initial accreditation by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology. The accreditation for Mechanical Engineering is retroactive for all graduates since October 2014.

ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates who are ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies, and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.

"Accreditation for these fast-growing programs affirms the commitment of St. Ambrose University to preparing graduates who are well-equipped to work in the challenging and increasingly important engineering profession," said Sister Joan Lescinksi, CSJ, PhD, university president. "This commitment is evidenced by the hiring of additional fulltime faculty in the Engineering and Physics Department over the past three years, as well the construction of three new state-of-the-art engineering laboratories added this year alone to better serve our mechanical engineering students."

Sought worldwide, ABET's voluntary peer-review process is highly-respected because it adds critical value to academic programs in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines, where quality, precision and safety are of the utmost importance.

Developed by technical professionals from ABET's member societies, ABET criteria focus on what students experience and learn. ABET accreditation reviews look at program curricula, faculty, facilities, and institutional support and are conducted by teams of highly skilled professionals from industry, academia and government, with expertise in the ABET disciplines.

ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). It currently accredits 3,709 programs at over 750 colleges and universities in 30 countries.
