First Show of the Season: 'Picasso at the Lapine Agile'

09/07/2017

The fall semester has begun, and that means it's time for another show on the Allaert Stage!

The first mainstage production is Picasso at the Lapin Agile, by Steve Martin. Martin was never an actual cast member of the popular sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live, but it is very easy to believe he was, considering he has hosted the show 27 times! He is widely known as one of the funniest comedians of all time, being named No. 6 out of 100 top comedians by Comedy Central. Not only does he perform comedy, but also has starred in many films such as The Jerk (1979); Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987); Father of the Bride (1991); The Man with Two Brains (1983); Cheaper by the Dozen (2003); The Pink Panther (2006); and many more. Adding to his abundant talents, Martin is a successful musician as a banjo player. Most importantly for us, he is an accomplished playwright having also written Zig-Zag Woman, Patter for the Floating Lady, and WASP.

Picasso at the Lapin Agile is a very clever and imaginative comedy about a bar in Paris - Lapine Agile - that is visited by the historical figures Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso, as well as many hilarious and unique characters created by Martin himself. The play takes place in 1904 on one specific night where all of these people find themselves in the same place. Not only is the story hysterical, but it is also incredibly smart, witty, and at times, touching. Freddy and his girlfriend Germaine own the Lapin Agile. Gaston, a somewhat sex-obsessed old man is a usual customer. Einstein, Picasso, Sagot, and off-the-wall Schmendiman all show up at the bar to discuss life, love, art, and why messengers are always painted nude. Picasso is painted (see what I did there?) as a major player throughout the story, though in 1904 he was actually just beginning his art career. At the end of the play there is even a surprise appearance by a certain 1950s celebrity. All I can say is that we "Can't Help Falling in Love" with him!

Picasso at the Lapin Agile will be performed October 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. and October 8 at 3 p.m.
