Fighting Bees roll to nationals; Queen Bee wins MCC title

Bowling grandma

Aretha Williams is St. Ambrose's first Midwest Collegiate Conference women's bowling champion.

March 2012

It was a big year on the lanes for St. Ambrose bowlers and the year is not yet finished.

The St. Ambrose men's team clinched their first trip to the national tournament in the program's three-year existence with a top three finish at the sectional qualifying tournament March 10-11 in Fairview Heights, Ill. They will travel to the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships April 19-21 in Lincoln, Neb.

The trip will cap a year that saw the SAU men claim  seven top-10 finishes, including the top total pin count at the Viterbo Invitational, a runner-up roll at the S.I. Elite Classic and a third at the Clarke Conference Invitational.  Freshman Kyle Anderson was MCC Newcomer of the Year and joined Bryan Thompson on the men's all-conference team.

In other news, SAU women's team missed a second straight national berth by one spot, finishing 52 pins behind fourth-place Robert Morris at the sectional qualifier. But sophomore Aretha Williams did win the individual conference championship in February. That's no small achievement when you take into account Williams is a 39-year-old grandmother of two. The Quad-City Times tells her story here.
