2015 Maddak Award

07/27/2015

An invention by St. Ambrose students Katie Wellman and Shannon Masterson beat out contestants from across the United States, earning them a first-place award in the national Maddak Competition this past May.

Wellman and Masterson submitted their assistive technology invention, created for a patient who could not see obstacles on his left side, and who regularly injured himself. The armband "Left Neglect Environment Detector" was devised to beep with increasing intensity as he approached objects that he did not detect visually.

Bother students are enrolled in the Master of Occupational Therapy Program.

Initiated in 1974, the Maddak Awards Competition for Product Design honors and supports the creativity and dedication of occupational therapy practitioners and students who continually look for new ways to enhance the rehabilitation of their clients.
